End Of The Year Final

History of Free People

Free People is an American bohemian apparel retail company that sells women's clothing, accessories, shoes, intimates, and swimwear. The first store was opened in Philadelphia by Dick Hayne in the 1970's. Free People is a part of Urban Outfitters Inc. and is sold all over the world. It started off very successful and the second store was named Urban Outfitters. Free People grew rapidly. They ultimately decided to name it Free People and made it it's own line. By the 2000's Free People had 81 boutiques spread around the U.S and 2 in Canada, and over 1000 specialty stores. "Free People is a specialty clothing brand featuring the latest trends and vintage collections for women who live free through fashion, art, music and travel."

The Blog

Free People also runs a huge blog that was started in 2006. It is not only made to support the store, but the lifestyle and culture it promotes. On the blog, you can find eight different sections that are bound to fit you just right.

  1. Fashion- trends, dressing for the weather, and fitting the 5 different customer types
  2. Music-  concerts, music festivals, and find new up and coming bands
  3. Beauty- natural beautifying techniques, hair styles, make up trends and product reviews
  4. Food- recipes for natural, healthy cooking
  5. DIY- ideas of crafts, homemade decor, and even pretty gift wrapping techniques
  6. Decor- the homes, offices, and closets of people on the Free People team and people who relate to the brand
  7. Inspiration- tips on how to live a happy, balanced, and healthy life
  8. FP Me- offers customers a chance to showcase their own personal style by creating a profile and posting pictures of how they wear and match Free People products
The Logo

The Free People logo represents the brand in such a simplistic and whimsical way. The font is hand written in cursive and transferred onto the computer. You can tell it is hand written by how every "e" is slightly different.  It is literally one of a kind. The logo gives off the 'free' part of Free People in the way it is so loosely written.  At first, they tried out lots of different fancier logos, but ended up with the simple one.

Job Opportunities

Free People can be found on any social media site, so of course there are lots of Graphic Design job opportunities. They like to maintain the same hippie-bohemian style through out their work, that you can see on their websites and in their look books. When applying for a job at Free People, they look for previous leadership roles, extracurricular activities, internship experience, relevant job experience, blogs/ relevant samples of work, and most importantly, fashion experience.
